National roundtable on peace and stability in South Sudan The way forward: challenges and recommendations

Conflict in South Sudan has continued to have a devastating impact on the population despite multiple efforts to stop the fighting. Between 2017 and 2019, Saferworld held eight state-level roundtable discussions with civil society platforms on issues of peace and security. Drawing on these discussions and our own analysis, we produced a national briefing paper with a series of recommendations for how a range of different people and groups could help build peace in the country. In July 2019, we brought together over a hundred representatives from the government, state authorities, communities, civil society, non-governmental organisations and the UN to discuss the recommendations and how to best implement them. This briefing highlights some of the main points from those discussions, including around law enforcement, arms proliferation, land and border disputes, cattle raiding, economic hardship, crime, gender-based violence and social cohesion.
