Addressing peace and safety concerns in Wau, South Sudan

Ongoing civil conflict and inter-ethnic violence and tensions have resulted in the deaths of many people in South Sudan’s Wau State. Many people have also lost property and thousands have been displaced. This briefing presents findings from a state-level roundtable discussion, organised by Saferworld in October 2018, which sought to identify the causes of conflict and provide potential solutions. Safety and security concerns in the state include continued movement of armed soldiers, gender-based violence, ineffective rule of law, conflict arising from cattle migration, and limited employment opportunities for young people. The briefing also proposes recommendations for government and civil society to address peace and safety concerns in Wau State.
