Abstract
In the post‐conflict situation in South Usulutan Province, El Salvador, a prototype “Local Zone of Peace Project” was initiated in 1995. The project seeks to institutionalize the peace achieved after 12 years of internal strife. Unless successful, violence here and in other parts of El Salvador will very likely reemerge. We can understand the establishment of such zones in El Salvador within the context of zones of peace theory and practice, and within the nation's own history.
